UPDATE

For those of you who read my blog entitled Redevelop This, you might be interested to read this article, another in the New York Times, this time from George Vecsey- really a sequel to the article whose link I posted in my column yesterday.

Marc, this is the same throughout the world, I am sure you are aware. In Australia there was a slogan in the 80's that read – 'Imagine if the community got their grants & the Defence Force had to hold a raffle to go to war!!' I agree that it is out of control what these councils (do not know the same word in the US)will spend money on for sports grounds & yet the essentials for the community go begging! The sporting clubs might contribute to the upkeep & building of these stadiums but the councils ultimately pick up the rest & then they wonder why the masses cannot afford to go to watch their teams play. In Australia, for a family of 2 adults & 2 children + food for the day can exceed $100 AUS, this is criminal! To me it has taken the gloss of what used to be a fun day out without to much cost!!.
